November 7, 2006--"A New Direction for America." There were plenty
of reasons for Democrats to cheer Tuesday night and on into Wednesday morning
at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. At the DCCC election
watch party, Democrats saw a stream of positive results flash up on the
big screens. As the evening wore on it became clear that their party
would regain control of the U.S. House for the first time in 12 years.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi declared, "Today, the American people
voted for change, and they voted for Democrats to take our country in a
New Direction. And that is exactly what we intend to do." The
balance in the U.S. Senate remained unsettled pending the outcome of the
races in Montana and Virginia. In his press conference on November
8, President George W. Bush aptly described the cumulative effect of the
mid-term elections as "a thumping." (more
