Democrats Win House, Senate and Governorships
Gains in 2006 Midterm Elections Set Stage for 2008
November 7, 2006--"A New Direction for America."  There were plenty of reasons for Democrats to cheer Tuesday night and on into Wednesday morning at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.  At the DCCC election watch party, Democrats saw a stream of positive results flash up on the big screens.  As the evening wore on it became clear that their party would regain control of the U.S. House for the first time in 12 years.  House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi declared, "Today, the American people voted for change, and they voted for Democrats to take our country in a New Direction.  And that is exactly what we intend to do."  The balance in the U.S. Senate remained unsettled pending the outcome of the races in Montana and Virginia.  In his press conference on November 8, President George W. Bush aptly described the cumulative effect of the mid-term elections as "a thumping."  (more reactions)
Among those in the crowd was Harold Ickes, head of Catalist (formerly Data Warehouse), which is building a massive database to help progressive leaning groups mobilize voters.
Timothy Wu of San Francisco, California was pleased with the results.
