DELAWARE GOVERNOR RUTH ANN MINNER TO JOIN SEN. BIDEN ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL IN IOWA

Gov. Minner Will Speak At A Women For Biden Event In Des Moines

Des Moines, IA (November 15, 2007):  This weekend, Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner will join Sen. Joe Biden on the campaign trail in Iowa. On Sunday, both Sen. Biden and Gov. Minner will speak at a Women for Biden event at the Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center in Des Moines, IA.

The Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center honors the establishment of the first Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC’s) in 1942.  Sen. Biden is the author of a resolution designating this week as National Veterans Awareness Week and he chose the location as a tribute to the brave women veterans who have served our country. The event begins at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 18th.

“Joe Biden and I entered politics at about the same time. For more than 30 years, I have watched him work diligently to address issues of critical importance to women, such as domestic violence, discrimination in the workplace and equal access to educational opportunities," Gov. Ruth Ann Minner said. "Joe has always said that the proudest moment of his career was the day his Violence Against Women Act passed into law. He recognized long before many others that women’s equality in the home was integral to women’s equality as a whole, and he worked tirelessly to draft the original legislation by hand.  I am extremely proud to support Joe Biden for president.”

Sen. Biden noted, “It is a tremendous honor that Gov. Minner, the first female governor in my home state’s history, will join me this weekend for a Women for Biden event. Her life story is an inspiration. Over her lifetime of service to Delaware, she has fought to restore the middle class through innovative education programs, environmental and alternative energy initiatives, and has restored jobs and increased access to health care.”

Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner is serving her second term as Governor of the First State. Her story in both the private sector and in her public service is an inspiring one. Gov. Minner dropped out of school at the age of 16 to help run the family farm and support her parents and siblings. When she became a widow at 32 with three young sons, Gov. Minner earned her GED and attended college, all while working two jobs and raising her family. She and her second husband, Roger Minner, began a successful auto-towing company, which remains family-owned today.  Prior to becoming the first female Governor of the State of Delaware, Gov. Minner served four terms in the Delaware House, three terms in the State Senate and served as Delaware’s Lieutenant Governor from 1993 until 2001.
