January 20, 2007--Kathryn Kist (right), an English teacher
at Olathe South High School, observed that:
Sam Brownback is very real. That what you see is what
you get. He doesn't tell an audience what he thinks he wants them
to hear, he tells them what he believes...
I like the fact that he is calling for Americans to be good again--to
use our greatness for good. He goes back to Alexis de Tocqueville,
who said America is great because America is good.
Ms. Howe from Marion, Iowa (left) stated:
Sen. Brownback I believe is the candidate that we need in 2008
for the Republican Party. I believe that he has the right values.
I believe that first and foremost his stance on sanctity of life is what
this country needs. We live in a culture of death, that so many millions
of families--women, men and children have been hurt by abortion, by the
policies that this country has passed down upon us. And he is one
of the only Senators who has stood against those policies and they have
hurt untold millions of women.
Question: There are other candidates who seem to espouse similar views.
How did you land on Senator Brownback?
Well, how did I land on him? I think it's because of
his faith. I believe that he's a man of God. I believe he's
a man of integrity...
And you know he sponsored the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act in the
Senate, and he's written articles on stem cell and he revisited Reagan's
proclamation of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, he wrote an article on that,
and he has been one of the only Senators that has really spoken up, been
willing to, more than others. I mean there are candidates who will
say, yes, I support pro-life, but he's willing to put the bills out there,
he's willing to speak more forthrightly. He's going to fight.
He's standing on the frontlines for us.
And I'm a woman who's had an abortion and regrets and I speak on it--well
I haven't in quite a while, but I spoke two years ago in Washington at
the March for Life, and you know abortion has done untold pain to millions
of women, and there' just aren't enough women who've heard that message...
And people like Sen. Brownback have the heart and compassion to realize
that.
Question: One of the things that's written a lot is that someone like
this can't possibly win a general election, can't possibly appeal to the
broader electorate.
In the big picture it would seem that that's true but our God
is a might God and I know that in 1860 President Lincoln wasn't supposed
to win the nomination at all either. And I know that through divine
intervention he did. And I am wondering is Sen. Brownback might have
the same kind of plan.
