34th Conservative Political Action Conference, Washington, DC, March 1-3, 2007
March 2, 2007--Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) speaks at CPAC.  Hunter delivered a speech built around the same framework as his announcement speech, with sun tracing its arc across the United States from Arlington Cemetery in Virginia to Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.  Hunter said China is cheating on trade. "And I can tell you that as president of the United States, I will junk the bad trade deal that we currently have with China," he stated. "More importantly, I'll stop their cheating on the one that we have right now."  On Iraq, Hunter said "it's tough work and it's difficult work and it's dangerous work, but it's worthwhile."  On the border with Mexico, Hunter described the success of the border fence in San Diego and said it must be extended.  "I wrote the law that was signed by the president which extends that San Diego border fence for 854 miles across Arizona, New Mexico and Texas--all the smugglers' routes," he said.  "We're going to build that border fence." Van Hipp, chairman of American Defense International, Inc. and a former chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party (1986-89) introduced Congressman Hunter, praising him as "the next best thing" to Ronald Reagan.  In an interview afterwards Hipp said, "If we get the grassroots, the leaders will follow."
