34th Conservative Political Action Conference, Washington, DC, March 1-3, 2007
March 1-3 2007--American Conservative Union Chairman David Keene presided over the 34th Conservative Political Action Conference, the biggest ever with more than 6,300 people registered, about half of them students.  Attendees heard from a range of conservative luminaries including nine declared, exploratory and potential presidential candidates: Sen. Sam Brownback (KS), former Gov. Jim Gilmore (VA), former Gov. Mike Huckabee (AR), Rep. Duncan Hunter (CA), former Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (NY), former Gov. Mitt Romney (MA), Rep. Tom Tancredo (CO), and businessman John Cox.  Sens. John McCain (AZ), Rep. Ron Paul (TX) and former Gov. Tommy Thompson (WI) did not appear.  A record 1,705 registrants from 49 states and DC participated in the much watched Straw Poll.  Results were: Romney 21%, Giuliani 17%, Brownback 15%, Gingrich 14%, McCain 12% and others 5% or less each.
