Conservatives: Freedom, Not Big Government Is Key >
36th Annual Conservative Political Action Conference, February 26-28, 2009

February 27, 2009--Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich entered in rock star-style, walking through the crowd to the accompaniment of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" instead of coming in from the side of the stage.  Gingrich started off his speech contesting a  headline in today's New York Times, "Obama's Budget Plan Sweeps Away Reagan Ideas."  Gingrich also garnered applause for challenging Attorney General Eric Holder's remark about "a nation of cowards."  "I welcome an opportunity to have a dialogue with you about cowardice anywhere, anytime," said Gingrich, suggesting Detroit as a suitable location.  Gingrich said President Obama's recent speech marks "the boldest effort to create a European socialist model we have seen."  Referring to the FY 2009 omnibus spending bill that the House passed the next day, Gingrich asked, "I wonder how dumb they think we are that we wouldn't notice 8,000 earmarks."

Gingrich told the audience they should work to make the 2009 and 2010 elections "among the most consequential in American history" and should work to elect "people who are actually willing to read the bills before they vote on them."  Gingrich did not exempt the Republican Party from blame.  "Tragically in the last few years the Republican Party became the right-wing of the party of big government and political elits and that's why there's a Bush-Obama continuity in economic policy which is frankly a disaster for this country and cannot work," Gingrich stated.  He pointed to "12 American Solutions for Jobs and Prosperity" as a starting point.  These include such ideas as abolishing the capital gains tax and cutting the corporate tax rate to 12.5 percent. Gingrich is also working on a novel due out in October based on George Washington's crossing the Delaware on Christmas Day.
Gingrich's American Solutions teamed with the Workforce Fairness Institute to make an elegant argument against the Employee Free Choice Act ("card check").  Attendees could enter a raffle of a couple of free Wiis; the cards had a note in fine print at the bottom:

By signing this Authorization for Representation Form, I authorize Political Workers Union Local 123 to represent me in negotiations with CPAC for better speakers, more comfortable seats and an all you can eat buffet during the conference.  And I'll pay whatever dues you demand.

Ah, just kidding.  But the union bosses aren't.  And if you think they won't resort to this level of deception you haven't been paying attention for the last 50 years.
