In 1968 after finishing his Peace Corps service Dodd, age 24, traveled around Latin America before returning to the United States.  Democracy in Action asked him about the route:

Chris Dodd: ...went down to Columbia, went down to Leticia, down the Amazon River to Manaus, then down the Rio Madeira to Puerto Velho, Brazil, then around the belly of Brazil and into Santa Cruz and Cochabamba and Sucre and Potosí and south to Tucumán [inaud.], Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Santiago, Chile, Valparaiso, Lima...
