October 19, 2007--Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) told the Washington Briefing
2007: Values Voter Summit that, "God has laid on our hearts two great things
-- the end of abortion and the renewing of the American culture."
In his speech Brownback emphasized the importance of faith. "The
separation of church and state does not mean the removal of faith from
the public square," he declared. At the same time, Brownback said
he does not favor a theocracy:
"That's been tried in Western civilization a few centuries
ago. It's bad for the church, it's bad for the faith, it's bad for
government. That doesn't work. But what I'm talking about is
a responsible role and being able to allow faith to flourish in the public
square."
This was Brownback's last appearance as a presidential candidate; citing
a lack of money he announced the end of his campaign later in the day in
Kansas. |
