August (10-20), 2006--Most of the statewide and federal candidates made appearances at the Fair.  (Above) Denise O'Brien, the Democratic nominee for Secretary of State, talks with a woman at the Iowa Democratic booth.  O'Brien and her husband have a family farm near Atlantic, and she is executive director of Women Food and Agriculture Network.  She is running against Bill Northey, a corn and soybean farmer from Spirit Lake who has served as president and as chairman of the National Corn Growers Association.  (Below) Bob Vander Plaats, the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor, greets people entering the Pork Producers tent.  Vander Plaats, a business consultant from Sioux City, had been running for Governor, but ended his campaign in February 2006 and join Congressman Jim Nussle, adding geographic balance to the ticket.  His Democratic counterpart, running with Chet Culver is teh current Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge.
