>Caucus Cooler reports that Sen. Sam Brownback visited Des Moines, Iowa on January 15, 2007 (January 16-Brownback "was meeting with folks in Des Moines yesterday.")  seeking further details...not yet included above-ed.

>Former Gov. Tommy Thompson visited eastern Iowa on January 13, 2007, holding meetings with supporters and potential supporters in Davenport and Muscatine and wrapping up with a private dinner in Davenport.

>Rep. Tom Tancredo visited Iowa on January 13-15, 2007 (arriving on the evening of January 12).  He did a couple of book signings, met with activists to sound them out on the possibility of setting up an exploratory committee, and did media interviews.  On the afternoon of January 13 he signed copies of "In Mortal Danger" at the Barnes and Noble in Council Bluffs; appeared on the Faith and Freedom Show with Jaime Johnson; and had interviews with a WHO radio reporter and with AP.  On the afternoon of January 14 he did a signing at the Barnes and Noble in West Des Moines.  On January 15 he did an interview/meeting with the Des Moines Register's David Yepsen and appeared on the Jan Mickelson Show.

George Pataki had been scheduled to visit Iowa on October 13-14, 2006 but cancelled the trip after a record snowstorm in the Buffalo area left hundreds of thousands without power.  On October 13 he had planned to host a business roundtable with small business owners and managers and three Cedar Falls/Waterloo area House candidates in the Waterloo Airport Terminal; attend a meet and greet for House candidate Connie Jacobsen at Lutheran Home Assisted Living Apartments in Vinton; be a special guest, with Congressman Jim Leach, at a reception for District 37 House candidate Andy Anderson at the home of Matt and Heather Smith in Cedar Rapids; and attend a house party for House candidate Greg Orr at the home of Ed and Andrea Failor in Muscatine.  On October 14 he was to appear at a kick-off rally before a major lit-drop on behalf of Roby Smith at the home of John and Janet Bremer in Davenport.

On August 10 he participated in an "idea raiser" at the home of Senate candidate Barbara Blanchard in Sioux City; and attended a fundraiser for Jim Nussle's gubernatorial campaign at Luciano's in Sioux City.
On August 11 he attended a Legislative Majority Fund breakfast (joint fundraising breakfast for Senate Leader Mary Lundby (SD-17) and State Rep. Kraig Paulsen (HD-35)) at the Cedar Rapids Country Club; attended a fundraiser with Jeff Lamberti at Wakonda Country Club in Des Moines; did a book signing for "Winning the Future" at the Republican Party of Iowa booth at the State Fair and then walked around the Fair with his grandson including a visit to the "Little Hands on the Farm" display, in Des Moines; and attended an Iowans for Tax Relief dinner at Fratello's in West Des Moines.
On August 12 in Des Moines he started with a Winning the Future breakfast at Republican Party headquarters (a gathering of conservatives who like Newt; not a fundraiser or sponsored by the IA GOP); and went to the State Fair for a second day, where he engaged in a dialogue on renewable fuels with Gov. Vilsack at the Penningroth Media Center and then walked around the Fair.

>Sen. Sam Brownback was scheduled to speak to the Des Moines chapter of Legatus in Des Moines, Iowa on August 10, 2006 but changed by Sen. Brownback due to other commitments.

>Gov. George Pataki, in South Carolina for the National Governors Association meeting, had been scheduled to make a quick trip to Iowa on the evening of August 5, 2006 for a tribute to  Sen. Stewart Iverson at Dows Convention Center in Dows and an "Alternative Energy Celebration" in Hubbard but weather intervened.

>Sen. Bill Frist visited Iowa on July 29-30, 2006.  On July 29 he ran in and finished the annual Bix 7 race in downtown Davenport; attended a lawn party in support of State House candidate Roby Smith at 220 Bechtel Rd. in Bettendorf; did a Health Policy Roundtable Mike Whalen for Congress at Thunder Bay Grille in Davenport; attended a reception in support of Representative Linda Upmeyer at 101 5th Ave North in Clear Lake; and attended a reception in support of Jim Nussle for Governor at 1522 Country Club Drive in Spencer.  At midday on July 30 he attended a reception in support of State House candidate Matt Reisetter at 2110 Franklin Street (Reisetter's boyhood home) in Cedar Falls.

On the afternoon of July 8, he toured the Linn County Fair in Central City, accompanied by state House candidate Emma Nemechek; he spoke at a fundraiser for State House candidate Connie Jacobsen (District 39) at the Don Krug farm near Atkins [Benton County]; and he was the keynote speaker at a fundraiser hosted by former MLB pitcher Cal Eldred and Cedar Rapids developer Jim Sattler for state Rep. Kraig Paulsen in Cedar Rapids.
On the afternoon of July 9 he spoke at an event for State House candidate Matt Reisetter (District 19) at the Tim Boettger farm west of Cedar Falls; and spoke at an event for State Rep. David Lalk and State House candidate Patrick Grassley (District 17) at Prestein Park in Denver [Bremer County]; and had a private dinner with about 15 Tama County activists near Toledo.
On July 10 starting early in the morning, he and former Gov. Terry Branstad were the special guests at a Larry Noble for Senate reception at the home of Steve and Rep. Carmine Boal in Ankeny, then he participated in a news conference on economic development and jobs with Noble at Accu-mold Corp in Ankeny; he was the guest on "The Jan Mickelson Show" on WHO radio in Des Moines; and he spoke at an event with State Senate candidate Jim Kurtenbach and Jim Hallihan of Iowa Games/Lighten Up, Iowa at Story County Medical Center in Nevada.

The Republican Party of Iowa held its State Convention June 17, 2006 at HyVee Hall in Des Moines, Iowa:
>Gov. George Pataki participated in events on June 16-17, 2006 in Des Moines.  On June 16 he was the keynote speaker at the GOParty Picnic, sponsored by the Republican Party of Iowa and the Iowa Federation of College Republicans, at Republican Party of Iowa headquarters; and appeared at the Iowans for Nussle reception on the rooftop terrace at the Iowa Historical Building.  On June 17 he appeared at Sen. Grassley's breakfast reception at Hy-Vee Hall.
>Sen. Sam Brownback did events on June 16-17, 2006 in Des Moines.  On June 16 he appeared at the GOParty Picnic, sponsored by the Republican Party of Iowa and the Iowa Federation of College Republicans, at Republican Party of Iowa headquarters; attended a private reception for Iowa Family Policy Center Action at a rented church fellowship hall near the picnic; and appeared at the Iowans for Nussle reception on the rooftop terrace at the Iowa Historical Building.  On June 17 he spent one and a half to two hours at the convention greeting convention-goers.

On the afternoon of May 25 in Cedar Rapids he participated in an event honoring veterans at City Hall, introduced by State Senate candidate Renee Schulte; stopped in at a coffee shop in downtown; and did a fundraiser for Renee Schulte at a private home.
On May 26 he did coffee with Republican leaders and meet and greet at the Wild Thyme Tea Room in Anamosa; participated in an event honoring veterans at Cedar County Courthouse Tipton Library in Tipton, introduced by State Rep. Jeff Kaufmann; stopped for lunch at Martha's Cafe in DeWitt; toured Clinton County Bio Energy in Clinton, introduced by State Rep. Steve Olson--this was also a fundraiser; and spoke at the campaign kick-off for Clinton Mayor LaMetta Wynn for State Senate, at Maquoketa Quality Inn in Maquoketa.
On May 27 he visited the farmers market in downtown Des Moines; and gave the commencement speech for Des Moines University at the Polk County Convention Complex.

Mitt Romney with wife Ann visited Iowa on May 6-8, 2006.  On the evening of May 6 he attended a fundraising house party for House Majority Leader Chuck Gipp at the home of Duane and Eileen Bruening in Decorah.  On the morning of May 7 he delivered the commencement address at Coe College in Cedar Rapids; he then took in a bit of a Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball game; and in the evening highlighted a fundraiser for Congressman Jim Leach at Martini's Grille in Burlington.On May 8 he spoke with College Republicans in the Pappajohn Business Building at the University of Iowa in Iowa City; and in the evening spoke at an Iowa Christian Alliance house party at the home of Bob and Patti Klaus in Cedar Rapids.

>Former Speaker Newt Gingrich visited Iowa on May 2-3, 2006 On May 2 he started with live radio interviews, spoke at an Iowans for Nussle fundraising event in the Heritage Room of First Citizens National Bank in Mason City; and joined Jim Nussle and Bob Vander Plaats to speak on "Rural Healthcare Challenges and Solutions" in the new dental facility at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge.  On May 3 he spoke at an Iowans for Nussle event at the Best Western Midway Motel in Dubuque; spoke on "Rural Healthcare Challenges and Solutions" at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester; and spoke at an Iowans for Nussle fundraising luncheon at VGM & Associates in Waterloo.

>Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani visited Iowa on May 1, 2006.  He met with Republican leaders including Bush/Cheney '04 Iowa chair Dave Roederer and former Gov. Terry Branstad; spoke at a joint luncheon fundraiser for congressional candidate Jeff Lamberti and the Republican Party of Iowa in Des Moines at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines; spoke at a Get Motivated seminar at Wells Fargo Arena (part of the Iowa Events Center) in Des Moines; and spoke at a dinner fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Jim Nussle at the RiverCenter in Davenport.

>Former Speaker Newt Gingrich visited Iowa on April 28-29, 2006.
On April 28 he toured the Virtual Reality Applications Center at Iowa State University in Ames; spoke on "American strategies for success in competing with China and India in a globalized world market" in Howe Hall Auditorium at Iowa State University in Ames; did "Iowa Press" at Iowa Public Television in Johnston; and did "The Insiders" at WHO-TV in Des Moines.
On April 29 he met with Nussle for Governor phone bank volunteers; met with Iowa Farm Bureau leaders at the organization's headquarters in West Des Moines; spoke to Republican Party of Iowa volunteers at the headquarters in Des Moines; and hosted a reception for the Republican Party of Iowa, did a book signing with Sean Hannity, taped an interview with Sean Hannity (aired May 2), and with Sean Hannity headlined the Republican Party of Iowa's annual Abraham Lincoln Dinner at Embassy Suites in Des Moines (this was reported to be the largest Lincoln Day Dinner in Iowa history with over 1,000 people attending).

>Sen. Bill Frist visited Des Moines, Iowa on April 23-24, 2006.  On the afternoon of April 23 he met with Iowa House Speaker Christopher Rants.  On April 24 he met with business and party leaders and then was the featured speaker at Iowa Health Systems spring forum at the Polk County Convention Complex; met with students at Des Moines University; and addressed the House Republican Caucus at the Capitol.

>Sen. John McCain visited Iowa on April 13, 2006.  He spoke at a breakfast fundraiser for State Rep. Steven Lukan (R-New Vienna) at the Country Junction in Dyersville; at a luncheon fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Congressman Jim Nussle at the in Cedar Rapids; at a Republican Party of Iowa meet and greet at Iowans for Tax Relief in Muscatine; and at a dinner fundraiser for 3rd District congressional candidate Jeff Lamberti at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines.
>According to news accounts he also met with Marlys Popma, a key activist from Lynnville, currently president of IHS (In His Service) Consulting.

>Sen. George Allen visited Iowa on March 17-18, 2006.  He headlined Republican Party of Iowa Victory fundraisers at Pipac Centre on the Lake in Cedar Falls early on the evening of March 17 and at the Radisson Hotel in Davenport on the morning of March 18.

>Gov. Mitt Romneyattended Republican county conventions in Waterloo, West Des Moines, Adel, and Davenport, Iowa on March 11, 2006.

>Gov. Mike Huckabee was the featured speaker at the Iowa Christian Alliance's (formerly Christian Coalition of Iowa) Annual Spring Kickoff Event at Des Moines Christian School in Urbandale, Iowa on March 6, 2006.

>Rep. Tom Tancredo spoke at the Pottawattamie County Republicans' Lincoln Day Dinner at Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa on February 25, 2006.

>Gov. George Pataki visited Iowa onFebruary 2-4, 2006.  On February 2 he spoke at a Victory 2006 reception at Luciano's Restaurant in Sioux City.  On February 3 he started the day in Mason City with a roundtable discussion with Rep. Bill Schickel (R-Mason City) at Country Kitchen; toured Golden Grain Energy and talked about alternative energy; and attended a chili cook-off at the Knights of Columbus Hall; in Charles City he met with business leaders at First Security Bank & Trust.  On February 4 he attended a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Jim Leach in Iowa City and attended the Hawkeye-Michigan men's basketball game.

>Gov. Mitt Romney visited Iowa on January 20-21, 2006.  On January 20 he had a lunch meeting with Congressman Steve King, and then held a series of meetings with small groups of Republican activists at Bayliss Park Hall in Council Bluffs, before crossing over to Omaha, NE for the Douglas County GOP’s annual “Elephant Remembers” fundraising dinner (which Sen. Chuck Hagel also attended).  On January 21 he held a series of four half hour meetings with small groups of Republican activists and elected officials at Northwestern State Bank in Orange City and then proceeded to Sioux City where he raised money for legislative candidates at an event organized by House Speaker Chris Rants.

>Former Gov. Jim Gilmore spoke at a Polk County GOP organizational meeting at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines, Iowa on January 16, 2006 (Martin Luther King Day weekend).  Ed. note: Gilmore was not widely seen as a presidential prospect until the latter part of 2006.

>Gov. Mike Huckabee was the special guest of the Sioux County Republicans at the 2006 precinct caucuses meeting in Sioux Center High School's Te Paske Theatre in Sioux Center, Iowa (Northwest corner of the state) on the evening of January 16, 2006.

>Gov. Mitt Romney visited Iowa on December 10, 2005.  He spoke at Congressman Tom Latham's year end campaign celebration in the Club House at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames; and at the "First Annual Holiday Kickoff Party" for Senator Brad Zaun, hosted by Tom & LaDonna Gratias, at the Home Builders Association in Johnston.  (visit initially scheduled for December 3).

>Gov. George Pataki visited Iowa on December 6, 2005.  He had lunch with Republican leaders; visited the Central Iowa chapter of the Red Cross in Des Moines; and spoke at a fundraiser for Taxpayers United, the political action committee of Iowans for Tax Relief, at a private home in Des Moines.

>After flying in from Nebraska, Sen. Chuck Hagel delivered the Manatt-Phelps Lecture in Political Science at Iowa State University's Memorial Union in Ames, Iowa on October 30, 2005.  He spoke on "A View from the Senate: Foreign Policy" and took questions.  After the speech, Hagel overnighted in Ames, but he left the next morning for Chicago without any further events.

>Former Speaker Newt Gingrich visited Iowa on October 29-30, 2005. On October 29 he attended a fundraising breakfast for the Legislative Majority Fund (Republican legislative candidates) at the home of Dan and Debi Latham in Mason City; flew to Cedar Rapids; attended a Legislative Majority Fund event at the home of Steven Rathje in Swisher; to Grinnell; met with Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Lang; and attended a reception for Speaker Pro Tempore Danny Carroll at the Carroll Pumpkin Farm in Grinnell.  On October 30 he had breakfast with DMR columnist David Yepsen; met with bio-deisel experts at the Iowa Energy Center (affiliated with Iowa State University); and took a private tour of Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines.

>Gov. Mitt Romney visited Iowa on October 29, 2005.  He was the guest speaker at a Scott County Republicans' hog roast at Club Mokan in Davenport; and the featured speaker at the Dallas County GOP's Steak Fry and Pie Auction at Waukee High School.

>Gov. George Pataki visited Iowa on October 27-28, 2005.  On October 27 he toured and visited with volunteers at the American Red Cross of the Quad-Cities Area in Moline, Illinois; headlined a fundraiser for a Davenport City Council candidate Brian Dumas; and was the featured speaker at the Clinton County Republicans' annual fall dinner at the Vista Grande in Clinton.  On October 28 he attended a breakfast fundraiser for congressional candidate Jeff Lamberti at Central College's Graham Center in Pella; and visited Vermeer Manufacturing Company in Pella.

>Sen. Bill Frist did a physicians roundtable and then was the special guest at the Republican Party of Iowa's 5th Annual Ronald Reagan Dinner at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines, Iowa on October 22, 2005.  Before leaving on the morning of October 23, he went for a run along the Des Moines River with Doug Gross.

>Gov. Mike Huckabee visited Iowa on October 13-14, 2005.  On October 13 as part of his NGA "Healthy America" chairman's initiative he toured two schools with Gov. Tom Vilsack: May Goodrell Traditional Plus Middle School in Des Moines and Ankeny High School in Ankeny.  He then joined congressional candidate Jeff Lamberti for roundtable discussion with activists at the Republican Party of Iowa headquarters in Des Moines.  On the morning of October 14 he gave the keynote address to the World Food Prize Symposium on Nutrition at the Marriott Hotel in Des Moines.

>Sen. Sam Brownback was the featured speaker at Iowans for Tax Relief's Iowa Taxpayers Day at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines, Iowa on October 8, 2005.

>Gov. Mike Huckabee and Sen. Sam Brownback and Congressman Tom Tancredo were guest speakers at the Polk County Republicans' annual GOP Fest at Jalapeno Pete's at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on September 17, 2005.
-On the evening of September 16, Gov. Huckabee taped IPTV's "Iowa Press."  OnSeptember 17 he had private meetings most of the day and a press roundtable in mid-afternoon before attending the GOP Fest in Des Moines.
-On September 17, Sen. Brownback attended a house party at the home of activist Stacey Cargill in West Des Moines; attended an ice cream social at the Ice Cream Shoppe in Waukee (Dallas County); and attended the GOP Fest in Des Moines.

>Gov. George Pataki visited Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 12-13, 2005.  On September 12 he visited Central Fire Station; attended a dinner at the home of Carey Downs Gibson; and attended a private reception in honor of the past president of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce at the Cedar Rapids Country Club.  On September 13 he headlined a Linn County Republicans breakfast fundraiser at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, toured the Highway Equipment Company; and was the keynote speaker at Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce 87th Annual Meeting at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.  Also on the trip he met privately with Republican leaders.  Pataki made the visit en route to Asia for a trade mission.

>Congressman Tom Tancredo was a guest at two events in Iowa on August 22, 2005,sponsored by King for Congress: a "Securing America's Future Forum" at Marriott Downtown in Des Moines; and a "Securing America's Future Enforcement Rally" at Bayliss Park in Council Bluffs.

>Sen. Sam Brownback visited Iowa on August 19-20, 2005.  On August 19 he attended the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.  On August 20 he spoke at the 2nd Annual Woodbury County Republican Fundraiser at Woodbury County Fairgrounds in Moville (15 miles east of Sioux City) and at the Pottawattamie County Republican Party's United We Stand Dinner at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.

>Former Speaker Newt Gingrich visited Iowa on August 12-13, 2005.
On August 12 he spoke at a Rotary Club breakfast at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines; met with former Gov. Terry Branstad at Des Moines University; did WHO-AM 1040's "Mickelson in the Morning" radio show; called in to "The Tony Snow Show"; held a health transformation roundtable at Des Moines Area Community College downtown campus' student education center auditorium (about 260 students and faculty in attendance); toured Pioneer Hi-Bred International in Johnston; called in to the "Sean Hannity Show" radio program; and appeared live on Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes."
On August 13 he appeared at fundraiser for U.S. House candidate Jeff Lamberti of Ankeny at the Republican Party of Iowa headquarters; made welcome remarks at a GOPAC-sponsored training session for school board candidates at the Republican Party of Iowa headquarters; toured the Iowa State Fair with State Sen. John Putney (Dist. 20, Gladbrook); and signed his book at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.  That was it for the schedule, but in a fortuitous turn of events Gov. Vilsack ran into the Gingrich contingent and invited him to participate as a co-celebrity in the 23nd annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show, which he did.
Gingrich had planned to stay until midday on August 14 but left on a more convenient early morning flight without doing any events.
Note: Just before this visit, on August 10, came the news that the Gingrich Foundation had made a $25,000 gift to establish the Newt L. and Callista L. Gingrich Scholarship at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

The National Governors Association held its 97th Annual Meeting at the Polk County Convention Complex in Des Moines, Iowa on July 16-18, 2005, with related events on July 15.  More than 30 governors attended at least part of the conference including Gov. George Pataki, Gov. Mitt Romney, incoming NGA Chair Gov. Mike Huckabee, and Gov. Haley Barbour.  In addition to the business sessions of the meeting, there were press conferences and social events, including an Iowa Cubs game, receptions at Terrace Hill and the Science Center, and a mini-State Fair.  The governors also did many interviews.  Below, from news accounts, are some politically noteworthy activities of Republican presidential prospects:
>On July 15 Gov. George Pataki attended a fundraising luncheon for the Iowa Republican Party at the Des Moines Club (Ruan Building) and later joined other governors at Principal Park for an Iowa Cubs game.  On July 16 he was one of several governors who visited the downtown farmers market in Des Moines, he had lunch with former Gov. Terry Branstad at the Court Avenue Brewhouse in Des Moines, and in the evening he attended the Marion County fair in Knoxville.
>On July 15 Gov. Mitt Romney attended the fundraising luncheon for the Iowa Republican Party at the Des Moines Club (Ruan Building), met privately with several Republican legislative leaders, and had dinner with former Gov. Terry Branstad.  He left late on July 16.
>On July 15 Gov. Mike Huckabee attended the fundraising luncheon for the Iowa Republican Party at the Des Moines Club (Ruan Building).  His band, Capitol Offense, played at an event hosted by the Republican Governors Association and the Democratic Governors Association on the evening of July 16.  He became NGA chair on July 18.

>Rep. Tom Tancredo visited Iowa on July 7-9, 2005.  He was the special guest at four house parties hosted by the Christian Coalition of Iowa.  On the evening of July 7 Tancredo attended a dessert reception at the home of Tom and Kate McGovern in Davenport; on the evening of July 8 he attended a house party at the home of Linda Tebussek in Cedar Rapids and a dessert reception at Cedar Falls Community Center in Cedar Falls. On the morning of July 9 he attended a continental breakfast at the home of of Ron and Becky Herrig in Dubuque.

>Former Speaker Newt Gingrich visited Iowa on May 11-13, 2005.
On the evening of May 11 he did a book signing at the  Barnes and Noble on University Avenue in West Des Moines; did a live appearance on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes;" and taped Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press" in Johnston.
On May 12 in Des Moines he did a breakfast (free to attend) with the Iowa Wednesday group sponsored by Progress for America, followed by a press conference; an ed board meeting at the Des Moines Register; did a press conference and spoke at Republican Party of Iowa luncheon fundraiser at the Sioux City Convention Center; did an ed board meeting with the Sioux City Journal; did a book signing at the Barnes and Noble in Sioux City; spoke at a RPI fundraising reception at the home of former Congressman Greg Ganske in Des Moines; and taped "The Insiders" for WHO-TV.
On May 13 he spoke at an RPI fundraising breakfast at the Cedar Rapids Marriott followed by a press conference, and did a series of events at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon.  He taught a class, attended a press conference to lauch Cornell’s initiative in the health sciences, called Dimensions: The Center for the Science and Culture of Healthcare >, delivered a lecture “Saving Lives & Saving Money: Transforming Health Care in the 21st Century;” and signed books for attendees.

>Sen. Sam Brownback visited Des Moines, Iowa on May 3, 2005.  He had a breakfast meeting with Des Moines area business and political leaders; met with a reporter from the Des Moines Register; met with other reporters at the Capitol; held other informal get acquainted meetings at the Capitol; and met with Craig Lang, president of the Iowa Farm Bureau, at the federation's office in West Des Moines.  Chuck Hurley helped organized the visit.
 

2004
>Sen. Sam Brownback visited Iowa on December 14-15, 2004, doing several meetings and events in the Des Moines area.  On the evening of December 14 he met with the board of directors and other leadership of the Iowa Family Policy Center.  On December 15 he was the guest speaker at a Cross Trainers event (Cross Trainers is a men's ministry, effectively a local Promise Keepers); met with conservative leaders; and spoke at a second Cross Trainers event.  Chuck Hurley, president of the Iowa Family Policy Center, a former state legislator and a law school classmate of Brownback's, helped organize the visit.
