>Former Gov. Tommy Thompson visited eastern Iowa on January 13, 2007, holding meetings with supporters and potential supporters in Davenport and Muscatine and wrapping up with a private dinner in Davenport.
>Rep. Tom Tancredo visited Iowa on January 13-15, 2007 (arriving on the evening of January 12). He did a couple of book signings, met with activists to sound them out on the possibility of setting up an exploratory committee, and did media interviews. downtown campus' student education center auditorium (about 260 students
and faculty in attendance); toured Pioneer Hi-Bred International in Johnston;
called in to the "Sean Hannity Show" radio program; and appeared live on
Fox News' "Hannity & Colmes."
On August 13 he appeared
at fundraiser for U.S. House candidate Jeff Lamberti of Ankeny at the Republican
Party of Iowa headquarters; made welcome remarks at a GOPAC-sponsored training
session for school board candidates at the Republican Party of Iowa headquarters;
toured the Iowa State Fair with State Sen. John Putney (Dist. 20, Gladbrook);
and signed his book at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. That was
it for the schedule, but in a fortuitous turn of events Gov. Vilsack ran
into the Gingrich contingent and invited him to participate as a co-celebrity
in the 23nd annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show, which he did.
Gingrich had planned to
stay until midday on August 14 but left on a more convenient early morning
flight without doing any events.
Note: Just before this visit,
on August 10, came the news that the Gingrich Foundation had made a $25,000
gift to establish the Newt L. and Callista L. Gingrich Scholarship at Luther
College in Decorah, Iowa.
The National Governors Association
held its 97th Annual Meeting at the Polk County Convention Complex in Des
Moines, Iowa on July 16-18, 2005, with related events on July
15. More than 30 governors attended at least part of the conference
including Gov. George Pataki, Gov. Mitt Romney, incoming
NGA Chair Gov. Mike Huckabee, and Gov. Haley Barbour.
In addition to the business sessions of the meeting, there were press conferences
and social events, including an Iowa Cubs game, receptions at Terrace Hill
and the Science Center, and a mini-State Fair. The governors also
did many interviews. Below, from news accounts, are some politically
noteworthy activities of Republican presidential prospects:
>On July 15 Gov. George
Pataki attended a fundraising luncheon for the Iowa Republican Party
at the Des Moines Club (Ruan Building) and later joined other governors
at Principal Park for an Iowa Cubs game. On July 16 he was
one of several governors who visited the downtown farmers market in Des
Moines, he had lunch with former Gov. Terry Branstad at the Court Avenue
Brewhouse in Des Moines, and in the evening he attended the Marion County
fair in Knoxville.
>On July 15 Gov. Mitt Romney
attended the fundraising luncheon for the Iowa Republican Party at the
Des Moines Club (Ruan Building), met privately with several Republican
legislative leaders, and had dinner with former Gov. Terry Branstad.
He left late on July 16.
>On July 15 Gov. Mike Huckabee
attended the fundraising luncheon for the Iowa Republican Party at the
Des Moines Club (Ruan Building). His band, Capitol Offense, played
at an event hosted by the Republican Governors Association and the Democratic
Governors Association on the evening of July 16. He became
NGA chair on July 18.
>Rep. Tom Tancredo visited Iowa on July 7-9, 2005. He was the special guest at four house parties hosted by the Christian Coalition of Iowa. On the evening of July 7 Tancredo attended a dessert reception at the home of Tom and Kate McGovern in Davenport; on the evening of July 8 he attended a house party at the home of Linda Tebussek in Cedar Rapids and a dessert reception at Cedar Falls Community Center in Cedar Falls. On the morning of July 9 he attended a continental breakfast at the home of of Ron and Becky Herrig in Dubuque.

Science and Culture of Healthcare

and met with Craig Lang, president of the Iowa Farm Bureau, at the federation's
office in West Des Moines. Chuck Hurley helped organized the visit.

visited Iowa on December 14-15, 2004, doing several meetings
and events in the Des Moines area. On the evening of December
14 he met with the board of directors and other leadership of the Iowa
Family Policy Center. On December 15 he was the guest speaker
at a Cross Trainers event (Cross Trainers is a men's ministry, effectively
a local Promise Keepers); met with conservative leaders; and spoke at a
second Cross Trainers event. Chuck Hurley, president of the Iowa
Family Policy Center, a former state legislator and a law school classmate
of Brownback's, helped organize the visit.
