Early Returns: Late 2006 Fundraising
Jan. 31, 2007-In late 2006 campaign and exploratory committees were just getting started with their fundraising or had not yet begun.  Also of note, candidates serving in Congress are able to transfer funds from their campaign committees so those committees are of interest as well.  Over seven weeks then-Gov. Tom Vilsack's campaign committee raised $1.13 million from 1,300 donors nationwide; about half of the total, $568,000, came from his home state.  In six weeks Sen. John McCain's exploratory committee reported contributions of $660,386 from 4,777 contributors; well over half of that, $403,220, came in on-line.  The "big hauls" are yet to come, evidenced by Mitt Romney's "National Call Day" on Jan. 8, 2007 which brought in $6.5 million.

Vilsack Doubles Early Fundraising Totals Posted by Dean and Kerry in 2004 Cycle
Political Outsider Takes In More than $1.1 Million in Last 7 Weeks of 2006

DES MOINES – Demonstrating he’ll have the financial resources to mount an aggressive campaign across Iowa and beyond in 2007, political outsider and Democratic candidate for President Tom Vilsack raised more than $1.1 million in the last seven weeks of 2006.  Vilsack’s total take is more than twice as much as Howard Dean and John Kerry each raised in the corresponding period in the 2004 campaign cycle.

“Tom Vilsack proved in the last seven weeks of 2006 that he’ll have the money to campaign across America in 2007 and win the Democratic nomination in 2008,” said Vilsack spokesman Josh Earnest.  “Vilsack’s strong performance is a powerful indication that his outsider status, successful record as governor and his plan to end the war and make America energy secure is resonating with voters.”
After declaring his candidacy on November 9th, Vilsack raised more than $1.13 million from 1,300 donors nationwide, including $568,000 from his home state of Iowa.  Vilsack’s strong fundraising totals dwarf the amount raised in the corresponding period by the eventual 2004 Democratic nominee, John Kerry, who raised $501, 898 and the Democrat who raised the most money before the 2004 Iowa caucuses, Howard Dean, who raised $169,657.  Vilsack finished the year with more than $396,000 cash on hand.
Earnest concluded, “Vilsack’s early fundraising success ensures that our campaign will be able to win Iowa and then the Democratic nomination based on his message of having the courage to create change in America.”
In December, Vilsack was the first to criticize Senator John McCain’s support for President Bush’s plan to escalate the war in Iraq.  Last week, Vilsack criticized various proposals to “cap” the number of troops in Iraq saying it was simply a “continuation of a failed policy” in Iraq.

Earlier this year, Vilsack completed his eight-year tenure as Iowa governor.  Vilsack declined to run for a third term in order to focus on his campaign for President. When Vilsack was elected in 1998, he was the first Democrat elected governor of Iowa in 30 years.  Under Vilsack’s leadership, Iowa became a national leader in renewable energy, expanded health care to 92,000 previously uninsured children and balanced the budget eight years in a row, while cutting taxes for middle class families.  Vilsack previously served as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and the Democratic Leadership Council.
