More than 100 Iowa Community Organizers Announce Support for Obama
“My years working as a community organizer in Chicago taught me that real change comes from the bottom up, when ordinary people get engaged and get organized,” Obama said. “That’s why I want this campaign to be about Iowans working together on a grassroots level to change the way politics is done in Washington. I am honored that these hardworking Iowans, who share my belief in the power of communities, have committed to being a part of this campaign. I look forward to working with them as we build a grassroots movement for change here in Iowa and across America.”
Putting law school and corporate life on hold after college, Senator Obama moved to Chicago in 1985 to work as a community organizer with a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods plagued with crime and high unemployment. Through coalition building and organizing, Obama helped form a tenants’ rights group that successfully fought to remove asbestos from an area housing project development. Obama’s work with community members resulted in the removal of asbestos from over 1,200 apartments in the development. Obama also worked to provide job training and placement for communities struggling with high unemployment rates.
These leaders in the Iowa community will utilize their years of grassroots organizing to help build the Obama organization from the ground up. Throughout the campaign, these organizers will play a key role by reaching out to the community and working together to change the status quo in Washington.
