NEW HAMPSHIRE

Friends—

Independence Day celebrations are a traditional early indicator of campaigns’ ground strength in New Hampshire, and many of you have asked about what we at the Obama campaign were up to today and over the past few days. When Senator Obama visited Laconia on Monday he talked about how important it is to realize the breadth of investment and participation in this campaign, and the report from the Independence Day activities around the state illustrates that perfectly.

As you may know, by the time the Independence Day holiday comes to a close, the Obama campaign will have been represented at more than 50 holiday events. We had a major presence at both the Amherst and Merrimack parades this morning, and we’ve been credited with having the largest and most enthusiastic group in Amherst. Our contingent featured a spirited all-intern marching band, homemade signs galore, a 1920’s Buick woody, a pickup truck, at least two handsome dogs, and about 150 people—more than enough to sustain a chant of “Obama / Oh Eight / Be a part of something great!” at a pleasing forte for blocks at a time.  One thing we did not have quite enough of was Obama stickers; demand was so brisk that we ran out by Turn 3.

As much fun as it was to pull out all the stops for the big parades, in many ways it’s the ability to reach people in the smaller towns that shows the difference here.

Our volunteers, staff, and interns were out earning our sunburn everywhere in the state: New Boston, Gilmanton, Weirs Beach, Milton, Sandown, Derry, Hancock, Antrim, Temple, Bartlett, Meredith, Raymond, Wolfeboro, and Conway, just to name a few. In a lot of these places we didn’t run into any other noticeable campaign presence. We still have folks out at a slew of events where I’d imagine the same is true. We were able to sign up hundreds of new supporters and dozens of new volunteers. All in all, it was a huge day—and week—for touching voters and getting the message out.

I’ll pass along more info once we regroup, but I think this gives a good sense of what we mean when we say that this campaign is about everyone. Check out our website for blog posts, photos, and video of the day—we already have some great pictures up. Please let me know if you have any questions or want to discuss further. Happy Fourth!
