November 28, 2005--The Capitol Christmas Tree, an 80 foot Engelmann Spruce from the Santa Fe National Forest in Cuba, New Mexico, arrived in the nation's capital after a week-long, 1,816 mile journey.  The tree was harvested on November 7, then taken on a tour of 18 New Mexico communities before leaving New Mexico on November 22.
The tradition of the Capitol Christmas Tree dates to a modest 24-foot live Douglas fir planted in 1964.  In recent years the tree had been referred to as the "Capitol Holiday Tree" to recognized the celebrations of different religious faiths, but Speaker Dennis Hastert directed a return to the Christmas tree designation.
