March 20, 2006--RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, speaking in the morning, said that the nation is at a "crossroads moment," facing both the global war on terror and global economic competition.  In his remarks Mehlman emphasized bipartisanship.  "We all want the same thing," he said.  "My door is always open," he told the fire fighters.  back >
Speaking in the afternoon, DNC Chairman Howard Dean urged the fire fighters to look at Republicans' actions rather than their words.  After outlining some policy priorities, including ethics legislation, real pension reform and real security, Dean devoted the closing part of his speech to values.  He said that Democrats' difficulties aren't because people disagree with the party, but because Democrats don't speak about "our values and who we are."  As a parent, Dean said he understands "how hard it is to raise a moral child."  He said that the major difference between the parties is how they answer the question, "Am I my brother's keeper?"  Democrats' fundamental value is, "We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers," while Republicans say the answer is no.
