April 4, 2006--Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who with Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) is an original co-sponsor of H.R.2330 (the House version of McCain-Kennedy's Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act) and is also chair of the House Democratic Caucus' Immigration Task Force, was cautiously upbeat about the prospects for immigration reform.  He noted "over 150 editorials supporting our proposal."  Gutierrez rejected one of the more frequent criticisms of the legislation he co-sponsored, saying he is not advocating amnesty but "an earned legalization to stay in the United States."  Looking ahead Gutierrez urged the audience to "channel this energy" and register people to vote.   (more)

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has co-sponsored a bill with Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) which would significantly boost border security and enforcement.  Cornyn rejected the notion of building a wall, saying it would promote a boom in the sale of 51' ladders.  "This is not an area where simplistic solutions are going to solve the problem," Cornyn stated.  In addition to his immigration bill, Cornyn has also proposed a North American Investment Fund to help economies like those in Mexico.
