The Alliance for Marriage, whose mission is "to ensure that more children in America are raised in a home with a mother and a father," drafted its Marriage Protection Amendment in July 2001.  Daniels argues that a constitutional amendment is necessary because of "almost a decade of activist lawsuits to destroy marriage." 

Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN), who spoke at this event, has scheduled a vote on the MPA (S.J.RES.1) for the week of June 5.  The amendment states:

"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.  Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman." 

Afterwards a staffer from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)'s office handed out a page captioned "Frist Puts Politics First," which described the MPA as "a proposal designed to divide the country and undermine the Constitution."
