Beltway Happenings
June 21, 2006--Former Speaker Newt Gingrich spoke at a Leadership Trust luncheon during NFIB's National Small Business Summit.  His remarks were full of practical advice and ideas for the small business owners.  He outlined the planning model he uses (vision, strategy, projects and tactics), reminded the audience not to get caught up in process, discussed the importance of metrics, and emphasized asking (open ended questions as opposed to binary questions) and listening.  Gingrich recommended the books "Leadership" by Rudy Giuliani, "The Turnaround: How America's Top Cop Reversed the Crime Epidemic" by Peter Knobler, and "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis.  He also took questions.
Afterwards Gingrich signed copies of his own book "Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract With America."  He has several books forthcoming: a significantly revised version of "Winning the Future" with four new chapters (July 17); "Rediscovering God in Washington" (Aug. 10); and "The Art of Transformation" (Sept.).  The latter book, which he is writing with Nancy Desmond, will examine large scale change, particularly in health care and defense.  Additionally he recently signed a contract to do three fiction works set around Pearl Harbor, similar to his Civil War series.
