Beltway Happenings
June 30, 2006--Former Senators Tom Daschle (D-SD) and Don Nickels (R-OK) participated in a Ceasefire on Health Care event at the National Alliance on Mental Illness' 2006 Annual Convention.  Ceasefire on Health Care is a campaign headed by former Sen. John Breaux (D-LA) "to stimulate dialogue with leading Republican and Democratic policymakers and advocates in order to develop meaningful, incremental reform to the nation's health care system."

Daschle stated that America does not have the best health care system and cited a number of statistics to back that claim.  At the same time he said that the United States should not attempt to adopt another country's health care system.  "We need an American system" he stated, a public-private system.  Asked about recent reforms adopted in Massachusetts, Daschle said the Massachusetts approach "has great merit" because it shares responsibility.  Daschle also emphasized wellness programs as a starting point.
