July 19, 2006--Bruce S. Gordon has now served as president and CEO of the NAACP for one year since he was confirmed at the organization's last convention.  He was previously president of retail markets at Verizon Communications.  Veteran civil rights activist Julian Bond became chairman of the NAACP in 1998.  Bond was among the founders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), was the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, and served more than 20 years in the Georgia General Assembly.
