August 7, 2006--Gov. George Pataki (R-NY) delivered a major speech
on "Energy Freedom, Putting an End to Foreign Oil's Dangerous Grip on America's
Future," in which he called for a national policy to replace 25 percent
of U.S. oil imports over 10 years using a variety of new incentives (text
of speech). Pataki envisages promoting increased efficiency and
greater use of non-petroleum fuels; bolstering the production of non-petroleum
fuels; and expanding the fueling infrastructure to make petroleum alternatives
readily available. He also highlighted energy accomplishments in
New York during his tenure as governor. Two and a half months ago,
another potential 2008 presidential candidate from New York delivered a
major energy policy speech in this same location (>).
