Beltway Happenings   ...4 of 4 >
August 7, 2006--Members of Transport Workers Union of America Local 100 handed out flyers before Gov. George Pataki (R-NY)'s speech at the National Press Club.  They have been without a contract since December and were also upset about Gov. Pataki's recent reappointment of Peter Kalikow as chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.  Several TWU members bought tickets to the luncheon and were in the audience.  Gov. Pataki fielded a question about their grievances, but when he did not answer it to their satisfaction, they disrupted the event and were escorted out.  Afterwards they gathered outside the building and fielded reporters' questions.  In an interesting parallel, when Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) delivered her energy policy speech here a couple of months ago, a couple of protesters likewise had to be escorted out after they became disruptive (their issue was the Iraq war).  (back)
