January 8, 2007--At a New America Foundation forum on "Preparing U.S.
Students for the Global Economy," Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) discussed legislation
he has introduced to "create rigorous, voluntary core standards for children
in grades K-12 in math and science." Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) has
introduced the legislation in the House. Among its provisions, the
Standards to Provide Educational Achievement for Kids (SPEAK) Act will
establish an incentive fund to encourage states to adopt the standards.
Dodd said that he expected "the opposition to this is going to be strenuous,"
but that he was "very hopeful." "If we don't get this right, then
we're in real, real trouble." (Below) Dodd shared a word with former
Michigan Governor and current National Association of Manufacturers President
John Engler. |
