Beltway Happenings
April 8, 2008-Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told members of Vets for Freedom at a rally on Capitol Hill that, "There is no substitute for victory, and withdrawal is defeat."

Later in the day the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee heard from U.S. Ambassador to Iraq  Ryan C. Crocker and General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General of the Multi-National Force in Iraq.  The hearings had implications for the ongoing presidential campaign; McCain is ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) is a member of Armed Services, and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is a member of the Foreign Relations Committee.

VFF, formed in Dec. 2005, is a non-profit, non-partisan organization established by combat veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.  The rally was one of the last events of VFF's three-week "National Heroes Tour."  Some 400 members were to spread out and visit legislators after the rally.
