Nov. 20, 2008--At the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC's "Inaugural Trade Show," VIPs and media were able to try out Michelle Obama's Shortbread Cookies.  The cookies are prepared by the Culinary Job Training students of DC Central Kitchen and chefs of The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC.

Michelle Obama's Shortbread Cookies
1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar
2 egg yolks
2 tablespoons Amaretto (almond liqueur)
1 teaspoon each orange and lemon zest
3 cups cake flour (not self-rising)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg white
Chopped nuts or dried fruit (optional)

Cream the butter, sugar, and salt.
Add eggs one at a time and beat until smooth.
Stir in flour, zest, and Amar4etto and mix only until everything is incorporated.
Spread dough evenly onto baking pan and brush top of dough with egg white and sugar.
Bake at 325 degrees until golden brown, approximately 25 minutes.  Enjoy!
