| Jan. 8, 2009--Following the meetings of the electors in the fifty states and the District of Columbia on December 15 (>), Congress met in joint session to count the electoral votes. The process required about forty minutes from the time Vice President Dick Cheney and a procession brought two wooden boxes containing the certificates of vote into the House chamber to when he hammered the session to a close (>). (Below) House staffers open the boxes. The blue box contained ceremonial pens. |
