Jan. 17, 2009--The Green
Inaugural Ball took place at Mellon Auditorium under the slogan
"Maximum Celebration, Minimum Impact." Jenna Mack and Stephanie
Campbell, co-founders of Event Emissary, put together the event.
Mack stated, "Every facet of this event has been greened."
Offsets were done by Renewable Choice Energy; organizers of the ball
presented them with their usage and footprint. Although a number
of firms offered green products, organizers decided not to do gift
bags. "If we gave things that people didn't want, there's the
possibility they'd throw them away," explained Mack. About 17
non-profit partners and the presenting sponsor Planet Green provided
time, energy, enthusiasm and speakers. The budget for the event
was close to half a million dollars. (more)

Note: There were two other
environmental themed balls, the more high-powered 2009 Green Inaugural
Ball, chaired by former Vice President Al Gore, on Jan. 19 at the
Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, and the
Environmental and Clean Energy Ball, hosted by The Clean Fuels
Foundation on Jan. 19 at Sequoia. |
