Jan. 30, 2009--A lottery determined the sequence of nominating and seconding speeches.  Oklahoma Republican Party chairman Gary Jones led off, nominating Ken Blackwell.  Jones said he was "looking for someone to complement what I do."  He noted Blackwell's record of success in seeking elective office (13 and 4) and said that Chip Saltsman had been making calls on Blackwell's behalf.  Joyce Lyons Terhes, National Committeewoman from Maryland, nominated Steele.  The new Iowa Republican Party chairman, Matt Strawn, was the first of four speakers for Duncan.  Glenn McCall, second vice chairman of the South Carolina. Republican Party, nominated Dawson.  Keith Butler, RNC Committeman from Michigan, nominated Anuzis.  Under the rules, a candidate can stay in the race until he or she chose to withdraw.  Voting continues until one candidate achieves a simple majority (85 votes).
