(Residents of the commonwealths and territories cannot vote for president in the general election.  However, the sizable population of American citizens living abroad, including members of the uniformed services and their family members, can vote absentee.  According to the
United States Election Project, the estimated eligible overseas population for the Nov. 2008 general election was 4,972,217.  The Federal Voting Assistance Program helps these overseas citizens vote).

Gobernador: Resident Commissioner Luis Fortuño (PNP) elected Governor with 52.8% of the vote, defeating Aníbal S. Acevedo Vilá (PPD) at 41.3%, Rogelio Figueroa García (PPR) at 2.8% and Edwin Irizarry Mora (PIP) at 2.0%.
Comisionado Residente: Pedro Pierluisi (PNP) elected Resident Commissioner with 52.7% of the vote, defeating Alfredo Salazar (PPD) at 42.3%, Carlos Alberto Velázquez (PPR) at 2.4% and Jessica Martinez Birriel (PIP) at 2.0%.

Democratic: Primary on June 1, 2008.  (In March 2008, the party's central committee decided to change from caucuses to a primary; the DNC approved the change on March 24).
