September 22, 2006--Addressing the Value Voters Summit, Gov. Mitt Romney
(R-MA) declared that "the culture of America is under attack." Massachusetts
is the only state that permits same sex marriages due to a ruling of the
state's Supreme Judicial Court. Romney spoke about how he has pushed
for a constitutional amendment to reverse the decision but said that there
are obstacles to that course. "We desperately need to have a federal
marriage amendment," Romney stated. "Marriage in one state affects
all of the states and therefore we have to have a federal standard that
says marriage in this country is a relationship between one man and one
woman," Romney said to applause from the audience. [transcript] |
