In his speech
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL)] spoke of cynicism and hope. He declared
that, "The campaigns shouldn't be about making each other look bad, they
should be about figuring out how we can all do some good for this precious
country of ours." "That's our mission," he said. "And in this
mission, our rivals won't be one another, and I would assert it won't even
be the other party. It's going to be cynicism that we're fighting
against." To counter cynicism, Obama said, hope is needed:
There are those who don't believe in talking about hope.
They say, well, we want specifics; we want details; and we want white papers;
we want plans. We've had a lot of plans, Democrats. What we've
had is a shortage of hope. And over the next year, over the next
two years, that will be my call to you.
