April 14, 2007--Declaring himself "proud to be a Republican," former
Gov. Tommy Thompson (R-WI), said, "I am so sick of those pessimists in
Congress, those liberal Democrats who get up in the morning and eat grapefruit
and suck lemons all day." Thompson described himself as "a reliable
conservative," and noted that he had vetoed 1,900 items as governor.
He closed his speech with a moving account of how his daughter, after coming
down with breast cancer, had had a baby daughter this January with helpf
from his other daughter who served as the surrogate mother. The experience
strengthened his believe "that pro-life is where this party has to be,"
Thompson said. Thompson's speech, although the longest of the evening,
earned perhaps the most enthusiastic response. (speech) |
