Giuliani
-On November 14, 2006
Draft
Rudy Giuliani for President announced it had begun airing radio
ads in Iowa and New Hampshire encouraging Mayor Giuliani to run for
president in 2008.
Bayh
-Bill Earl, a 55 year-old
part time high school instructor who is one of the leading activists of
Americans for Bayh, went to Iowa to spread the word about Bayh for ten
days in the latter part of July 2006. In a July 28 posting, he
wrote,
"Reminding some who saw him of Johnny Appleseed many many years before,
this Californian criss-crossed Iowa with a ream of 'Bayh For President
2008' flyers. No part of the state was off-limits. He hit
the
cities...and the farms. Highways and byways. For 10 days,
he
was OUR REPRESENTATIVE for Bayh Grassroots, in the one state that may
make,
or break, Evan Bayh."
Rice
-Americans for Dr. Rice,
a 527 group seeking to draft Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, was
quite
active in Iowa in 2005:
The group reported running a 15-second radio spot in Iowa starting Feb, 15, 2005 to promote its website (coinciding with the CPAC conference in Washington).
In August, on her way back to North Dakota from four days at the Republican State Convention in North Carolina, Americans for Rice research director Crystal Dueker spent the day Des Moines meeting political people and seeking to raise awareness of the group. Her Mini Cooper, "plastered with 'Condi 2008' stickers, attracted attention from people wanting the stickers for their cars and friends, and she was interviewed by Tom Beaumont of the Des Moines Register.
Dueker and Kavon Nikrad from Minnesota carpooled in the Mini Cooper to Des Moines for the Polk County Republicans' GOP Fest on September 20. This event was attended by over 800 people.
Americans for Rice ran its new 60-second TV spot in Des Moines starting October 16 on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," on October 17 on "Good Morning America" and "The View," on October 18 during the fourth episode of "Commander-in-Chief," and from October 24-28 on WOI ABC TV morning news.
Americans for Rice was scheduled to have a table at the Republican Party of Iowa's Fifth Annual Ronald Reagan Dinner in Des Moines on October 22.
Activity Outside Iowa
-While Sen. Hillary
Rodham
Clinton did not make any visits to Iowa in 2005-06, she was in
touch
with Iowans. The Des Moines Register's Tom Beaumont
reported
in a Dec. 4, 2006 exclusive that, "Sen. Hillary Clinton began making
calls
today to Iowa Democrats about the state’s political landscape with an
eye
toward its 2008 presidential nominating caucuses." According to
several
news reports in May 2005, Clinton invited Iowans to her Washington, DC
home for a fundraiser for her 2006 re-election campaign.
-The
Greater
Des Moines Partnership's 26th annual lobbying trip, dubbed Destiny
DC 2005, brought more than 175 business and community leaders from
Central
Iowa to Washington, DC on June 8-10, 2005.
Participants arrived on a chartered Northwest Airlines jet and engaged in a busy program that included speeches, workshops, briefings, a reception or two, and of course lobbying congressmen and congressional staff. The Partnership prepared a 133-page book providing relevant information on subjects ranging from transportation and infrastructure to homeland security. It placed a particular focus this year on funding for projects to improve the quality of life in the greater Des Moines area. For example, among the featured priorities were $9.1 million for the Principal Riverwalk, $100,000 for a regional study of multi-use trails, and so forth. Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN), seen as a likely 2008 presidential prospect, spoke at a luncheon on the first day. According to news accounts, a number of other hopefuls stopped by to visit with these Iowa leaders. |
