WASHINGTON—The American Federation of Teachers “Your Voice, Your Vote” bus will be rolling into key battleground states this week, with Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm joining AFT President Randi Weingarten, AFT Secretary-Treasurer Antonia Cortese and others at various stops along the way to talk about the new leadership Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Joe Biden will bring to the nation and our communities.
“We have to turn around the economic damage that eight years of the Bush administration has produced,” Weingarten said. “AFT members, like many Americans, are excited about the Obama-Biden ticket and are confident about the steps they will take to strengthen the economy, our nation’s public schools and our healthcare system.”
Weingarten will have campaigned in 16 states and the District of Columbia by Election Day.
The bus tour kicks off Oct. 30 in Detroit with a get-out-the-vote rally, featuring Gov. Granholm. Later that evening, the bus tour moves on to Toledo, Ohio, where Weingarten will join members in making phone calls to fellow union members.
On Oct. 31, the tour continues through Cleveland, with a get-out-the-vote rally featuring Sen. Brown. The bus tour rolls on to Cincinnati that day for an afternoon rally featuring Sen. Clinton.
On Nov. 1 in Pittsburgh, Weingarten and others will go door to door, speaking with union members. The tour will conclude at a large labor rally organized by the United Steelworkers, which is scheduled to feature several other international union presidents, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, Steelers players and others.

AFT President Randi Weingarten To Get on AFT Bus for Obama
WASHINGTON – The American Federation of Teachers’ all-out effort to help Barack Obama win the presidency continues with a set of wheels and a microphone—AFT President Randi Weingarten will board a bus later this month to meet with AFT members in critical battleground states.
“We’re dealing with the culmination of eight years of bad decisions that have affected all areas of daily life,” Weingarten said. “We desperately need Barack Obama’s agenda to strengthen the economy, close the achievement gap, reduce college tuition, make healthcare accessible and affordable, and stop the neglect of public services that Americans count on.”
The tentative itinerary for the Oct. 30 - Nov. 1 AFT bus tour includes Detroit, Mich.; Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio; and Pittsburgh, Pa. Activities will include various rallies, meetings and other events with AFT members. Local community leaders and elected officials will be invited to join President Weingarten and participate in these AFT events. Specifics will be finalized next week. Reporters are welcome to join Weingarten on the bus.
Weingarten has previously joined with AFT members to campaign for Obama in Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Missouri, and is scheduled to travel to Virginia, Florida, Wisconsin and Minnesota before the bus tour rolls out.
