Endorsements by Newspapers and Magazines in the 2008 General Election

Primary Endorsements
2004 General Election Endorsements
2000 General Election Endorsements
The process by which newspapers make endorsements, the timing of them, and the various arguments made for and against the candidates offer rich areas for analysis.
Newspaper endorsements can be significant in contested primaries or in local or initiative races, but they likely have little impact in the presidential campaign general election where an abundance of information about the candidates is available.  In his Oct. 3, 2008 column, Editor & Publisher's Greg Mitchell considers the question "Do Newspaper Endorsements Matter? Here's One Vote for...Yes."  Editor & Publisher does a first-rate job tracking endorsements and is the definitive source on endorsements by daily newspapers including the number of newspapers backing each candidate, the cumulative circulation, and newspapers that have switched from 2004 (Bush to Obama or Kerry to McCain).  Editor & Publisher found 296 daily newspapers with a total circulation of 30.5 million endorsing Obama compared to 180 with a circulation of 11.9 million endorsing McCain (in 2004 the numbers were 213 to 205 for Kerry over Bush).

Depending on the paper, the editorial board, the publisher or the owner may weigh in to varying degrees to determine who the paper supports.  Terminology comes into play; some papers prefer to "recommend" rather than "endorse;" one paper made it very clear that it was not endorsing either candidate but rather making a "selection."  Some papers do not endorse (or recommend or select); some eschew endorsing in the presidential race, where they do not have access to the candidates, but do endorse in local contest.  Other papers rarely endorse, so when they do the endorsement takes on more significance.  Other papers may have a track record of endorsing the candidate of a particular party; a switch calls attention to the endorsement.  (For example, the Chicago Tribune's endorsement of Obama marked the first time in its history it had endorsed the Democratic nominee for president).

Regardless of their impact or lack of impact, endorsements frequently offer well written, thoughtful views on the candidates' strengths and weaknesses.  Below is a partial listing of links to endorsements.  Consider the arguments in the editorials.  How well reasoned are they or do they largely repeat campaign talking points?  What does a particular ed. board see as the strengths and weakness of the candidate they are endorsing and of the other candidate?  How much space do they devote to the other candidate?  To the vice presidential nominee?  Is the endorsement strong and enthusiastic or does it come with reservations or seem tepid?  Does it reflect a divided editorial board?  In a few instances a divided ed. board will lead a paper not to endorse, or it may publish dissenting views.

Also interesting are readers' reactions to an endorsement; many papers post these on their websites.  Invariably one finds readers who are not surprised that the liberal/conservative rag would make such an endorsement and those who vow to cancel their subscriptions.
At the same time a non-endorsement will lead some readers to call the paper "spineless."  Finally, the campaigns make use of endorsements; in the closing weeks of the race, they issue a steady stream of press releases highlighting their endorsements.

Methodology: The list of daily (plus a few three times a week) newspaper endorsements below is fairly thorough but definitely not exhaustive (see Editor & Publisher and Wikipedia).
The starting point for assembling this section was information from the campaigns, supplemented by information from Editor & Publisher and Wikipedia.  Dates are from the newspaper websites.  (Unfortunately there is a bit of fuzziness on a few of the dates.  In some instances newspapers post their endorsements on their websites a day ahead of when they appear in the print editions; it is not clear on which day they appeared in the paper or indeed which should be considered the date of the endorsement).

Word clouds produced by E.M. Appleman with Wordle using texts of about 65 Obama endorsements, 3 non-endorsements and 50 McCain endorsements.  Click for larger.

Notes
-Gannett reported that 43 of its newspapers endorsed Obama, 12 McCain and 28 did not endorse.  By comparison in 2004 33 endorsed Kerry, 28 Bush, and 22 made no endorsement.

-Several chains run endorsements across their papers:
Ogden Newspapers Inc., which publishes about 40 daily newspapers in a dozen states, endorsed McCain.  Its editorial on character, in some cases rewritten a bit, appeared in many/most of its papers including:
Minnesota
New Ulm Journal

North Dakota
Minot Daily News
Ohio
Steubenville Herald Star
Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune
Warren Tribune Chronicle
Pennsylvania
Lewiston Sentinel
Williamsport Sun-Gazette
West Virginia
Parkersburg News and Sentinel,
Martinsburg Journal
Weirton Daily Times ...slightly modified
There was also a McCain endorsement editorial on the economy that ran in a number of the chain's papers including the Wheeling Intelligencer (WV), Daily Mining Gazette (MI), Steubenville Herald Star (OH) and Lewistown Sentinel (PA); several papers ran both the character and the economy endorsements.

Shaw Newspapers (Dixon, Ill.), which includes a dozen papers in Illinois and Iowa, featured an endorsement from  CEO Tom Shaw.

-Weekly, alternative, specialty and college newspapers also weighed in.  Some of these papers favored Obama even more than dailies
.  The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies found 57 papers endorsing Obama and none for McCain.  Editor & Publisher reported a 66 to 2 margin among college newpapers endorsing Obama; only the papers at the University of Mississippi (Daily Mississippian) and Mesa State College in Colorado (The Criterion) endorsed McCain.  Below is a smattering of examples pointed out by the Obama campaign.
