May 17, 2006--Attention has centered on the question of immigration
from Mexico, but other nationalities have a stake in the outcome of this
debate. On May 17, immigration reform advocates lobbied on Capitol
Hill (later in the afternoon there was an "immigrant rights mass rally
and march" on the Mall - photos).
Although the majority of those who lobbied have roots in Mexico and Latin
America, a number of Irish made the rounds as well. The Irish Lobby
for Immigration Reform (ILIR) launched in Dec. 2005; according to its website
there are an estimated 50,000 undocumented Irish in the United States. |
