May 12, 2008-Accompanied by wife Jeri and son Derek former
Republican Congressman Bob Barr of
Georgia announced his candidacy for the Libertarian Party presidential
nomination. Barr described himself as a competitor and said he
would be a president "who, during his first year in office, his
first days in office, will order a freeze on discretionary spending,
will then seek to dramatically cut the size, the scope, the power of
the federal government." Barr announced formation of an exploratory committee on April 5. Russ Verney (below left), who managed Ross Perot's 1996 campaign, has been running Barr's effort leading up to the Libertarian Convention in Denver on May 22-26. Doug Bandow (below right, with beard), a former columnist and senior fellow at the Cato Institute, is advising Barr on policy. |
