2008 update
U.S. SenateSen. Dick Durbin (D) easily won re-election, defeating Steve Sauerberg, M.D. (R) by 67.8% to 28.5%.
U.S. House
In the March 8, 2008 special election in the 14th CD (northern Ill. west of Chicago), Bill Foster (D) was elected to succeed former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R).  On Nov. 4, Democrats gained another House seat in the open 11th CD (I-80 from south of Chicago to near the Mississippi River) as State Sen. Debbie Halvorson (D) defeated Marty Ozinga (R).  In the open 18th CD (central and western Ill.), State Rep. Aaron Schock (R) kept the seat Republican, defeating Colleen Callahan (D).  The U.S. House delegation goes from 11D, 8R to 12D, 7R the 111th Congress
Post-Election: President-elect Obama named Rep. Rahm Emanuel as his White House chief of staff on Nov. 6; Emanuel resigned effective Jan. 3.  Obama resigned his Senate seat effective Nov. 16.  Gov. Blagojevich had responsibility for filling the seat.  Blagojevich was arrested on Dec. 9 on corruption charges including conspiring to sell the Senate seat.  Nonetheless on Dec. 30 he announced the appointment of former state Attorney General Roland Burris.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid initially said that the Democratic Caucus would not seat Burris, but later reversed himself and Burris was sworn in on Jan. 15.  On Jan. 29, the Illinois Senate voted 59-0 to impeach Blagojevich, and Lt. Gov. Patrick Quinn was sworn in as Governor.  In the 5th CD, the primary special election occurred on March 3, 2009 and Mike Quigley (D) won the general election on April 7.

Setting the Primary Date
On Jan. 10, 2007 Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (D) proposed moving the Illinois presidential primary from March 18 to Feb. 5 to aid a possible campaign by Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL).  The House passed HB0426 on March 28, 2007, the Senate passed the bill on May 15, 2007, and Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) signed it into law on June 20, 2007.

2004 Overview
Although the Democratic margin was slightly reduced, Kerry-Edwards easily carried Illinois, gaining a plurality of 545,604 votes (10.34 percentage points).  Kerry carried only 15 counties to 87 for Bush.  Cook County again accounted for about 39 percent of the votes cast in the presidential race (2,049,434 of 5,274,322), providing a plurality for Kerry of 842,319 votes.

2000 Overview
Illinois remained solidly in the Democratic column as the Gore-Lieberman ticket won with a plurality of 569,605 votes (12.02 percentage points).  Gore carried a total of 24 counties to Bush's 78.  Cook County, which accounted for 39% of the votes cast in the race for president (1,865,907 of 4,742,123), provided a plurality of 746,005 votes for Gore.
