With the 2006 mid-term elections about seven weeks off, hundreds of
social conservative activists gathered in Washington, DC for the inaugural
"Washington Briefing: Voter Values Summit." The event, similar to
but smaller than the "Road to Victory" conferences that used to be put
on by the Christian Coalition, was organized by Family Research Council
Action and co-sponsored by Focus on the Family Action, Americans United
to Preserve Marriage, and American Family Association Action. Five
potential 2008 presidential candidates addressed the briefing: Gov. Mitt
Romney (R-MA), Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR), Sen.
George Allen (R-VA) and former Speaker Newt Gingrich. Many other
prominent conservatives spoke, including talk show host Sean Hannity, White
House Press Secretary Tony Snow, and author and columnist Ann Coulter,
and participants also heard from panels on subjects such as "the preservation
of traditional marriage" and "attorney generals in the culture war." |
