September 22, 2006--Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), Chairman of the House Republican
Study Committee, presented his immigration reform plan, outlining four
major principles. "We must do border security first," Pence said,
"first and exclusively for two years." "We must reject amnesty in
any form," Pence said; under his plan people will apply at "Ellis Island
Centers" outside the United States. Third, Pence said, "We should
create a new guest worker program." Fourth Pence called for fines
and penalties on employers of illegal immigrants. Pence was the subject
of a modest presidential draft movement
in 2005 and early 2006 although it appears to have cooled; some conservatives
view his immigration proposal as "amnesty lite." |
